Chapter Twenty-One

Sitting around the fire with Gar, I take every joke and taunt the Dare brothers throw at me. Gar joins in, but he always makes sure I know he’s joking. What a sweetheart.

I don’t know why, exactly, but it feels good to be teased by the Dares. I had such a good day out here with them, and to know they’re comfortable enough to be themselves around me has me feeling like I’m a part of the group. Gar definitely helps, and once again, I find myself baffled at the company I’ve met in Seward.

Jed dishes back the banter with quick wit, and soon enough, everyone is drunk and laughing, the taunts spreading out to encompass everyone instead of just the two of us. Yeah, we snuck off to fuck on a mountain. So what? It was well worth it.

I’m learning that all the Dare brothers are the player type. They don’t come off as demeaning or disrespectful about it, but they aren’t ashamed of it either. They found a lifestyle that works for their current situation and they’re happy to live in it. I can respect that. None of them struggle to find eager partners, but I’ve picked up that Bo is in a committed relationship and Hardin is hooked on one girl. They like to give Hardin a hard time about it, but I can tell that’s their way of trying to encourage him to admit he feels something for her.

“You pick out an engagement ring for Freya yet, Har?” Rydan taunts. “He’s going to be the one to get Grandma’s ring.”

“Go fuck yourself, Ry.” Hardin holds up his middle fingers. “You’re just jealous that I figured out how to fuck a local chick and get away with it.”

“You think you’re getting away with this shit?” Four laughs. “She fucking owns you, man.”

Hardin grins at that, but he doesn’t deny it. “I could walk away whenever I wanted,” he says, knowing it’s bullshit. Everyone throws snow at him, and I can’t help but laugh along with them.

“Careful, Laken,” Jed says, leaning into my side. “You want to be the target of this bullshit again?” He grins.

“You whispering sweet nothings in her ear, Jed?” Kolt taunts. “Didn’t take you for the romantic type, you twat.”

“Guess you’re the target,” I tell Jed.

“Okay, I gotta know,” Bass stands. “What’d he do to get in your pants? What’s he got that the rest of us don’t?” He looks right at me; they all look right at me.

Deciding Jed can take a joke, I shrug. “He was just the first one I met.” I grin at Jed.

Jed fakes heartbreak, and then three of his brothers pounce on top of him to beat him while he’s down. I laugh with them, enjoying the show with Gar.
